Several local tracksters showed their talents at their district track meets last week. Some moved on to the area meets and medals there will push them toward the state track meet in Austin in early May.
The Teague Lions took to the track at Westwood High School in Palestine and will send several to the area track meet. Tayvis Coleman is finishing a stellar career at Teague High School and he took a win in the long jump by passing 20 feet in route to a district title. He also finished second place finish in the 200 meter dash and the triple jump.
Dustin Angel and Bryan Vasquez completed a double in the 1600 meter run with a first and second place finish. Angel finished second in the 3200 meter run Vasquez finished fourth in the 800 meter run.
Senior Marcus Williams had a third place finish in the discus behind a pair from Malakoff and a second place finish in the shot put.
The ladies flew past the competition as well. Freshman Michelle Moreno won the 200 meter dash edging a pair from Westwood. Moreno also finished third in the 400 meter dash. She qualified in a third event with a third place finish in the long jump
Lizette Aguilera won the 800 meter run by over two seconds and classmate Abril Arrezola finished third in the event. Aguilera dominated the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:40, more than 14 seconds ahead of second place. Earlier in the meet, she won the 3200 meter run by almost 30 seconds and Arrezola came in fourth to qualify for the area.
Three ladies took the top three spots in the finals of the triple jump. Destanee Roblow (33’5.75”) edged out teammates Moreno (33’ 4”) and Macy Guerrero (33’ 1.75”).
Jenna Isbell finished second in the shot put.
The Lady Lions will qualify one relay in the area meet. The mile relay finished third.
Kiley Persons finished fourth in the 100 meter dash and qualified for the area meet.
The Lions finished third in a fast sprint relay behind Elkhart and Malakoff and will head to the area meet. The 4×200 meter relay finished second behind Malakoff and fourth in the mile relay so all three relays will be in the area meet.
The Wortham Bulldogs held their meet at Axtell High School and will send a few to the next round of track events. KJ Jackson was six hundredths of a second from a first place finish in the 100 meter dash. Paul Pina of Axtell edged him our but both advance to the area track meet at Palestine High School in a couple of weeks.
Jackson also qualified in the long jump with a fourth place finish.
In the ladies division, Zaria Oates came up in a big way for the lady Bulldogs. She won the triple jump and the long jump by almost two feet over Shontel Watson of Riesel. She finished second in the 100 meter dash
Nikki Boney completed a second place finish in the 3200 meter run with a time of 14:03 and fourth place in the 1600 meter run. She qualifies for the area meet in both events.
