Dear Editor:

Most believe the number one job for a President is to keep the American people
SAFE. It’s more than fair to evaluate a President’s performance, and ask ourselves:

Are we SAFER? Or LESS safe?

Trump, on his own, and with help from DOGE, has ordered mass firings and
program shutdowns at agencies like DOJ, the FBI, NSA and the CIA which cannot
help but weaken America’s ability to address threats. This includes counterterrorism
efforts, disaster preparedness, and cybersecurity. Are we safer, or LESS safe?

Trump, asked in a press conference with Putin whether Russia interfered in our
elections … interference America’s intelligence agencies had confirmed … said he
believed Putin’s denial over our own agencies. Are we safer, or LESS safe?

Trump Appointed Supreme Court Justices to overturn Roe v Wade, which allows
some states to ban abortions. Are women safer, or less safe?

Trump unilaterally cancels international agreements, from trade deals to nuke deals
to global climate change treaties. A nation that cannot be trusted to honor its
agreements cannot work with other nations on issues that affect the future. Does this
make America safer, or LESS safe?

Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” on the budget takes a $Trillion from Medical care.
Texas has 47 rural hospitals at great risk for closure, and the primary issue is
Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement; this new budget bill will probably deliver the
final nail for their coffins. Are Texans safer, or less safe?

Trump has set a quota for ICE agents, which has them scooping up many more
immigrants with NO criminal records than those who meet his promise of targeting
“the worst of the worst.” Without any due process, Trump is sending these people to
overseas prisons, many who were legally here, had jobs and families, and even
some who are CITIZENS. We can’t know, because there is no due process. Are
Americans safer, or less safe?

Trump is using the power of the threat of the federal government to blackmail
universities, law firms, and media companies, to enrich himself personally, and to
enact a discriminatory agenda. Increasingly, he’s using the threat of arrest against
anyone daring to speak out against his actions. Are we safer, or LESS safe?
Trump abandoned Obama’s anti-nuke deal with Iran, and replaced it with
NOTHING. Are we safer, or less safe? After promising to end wars “on day ONE,”
Trump has not only NOT ended the wars in Russia/Ukraine and Israel/Gaza, but he
has entered the USA into a war with Iran. Are we safer, or LESS safe?

Trump has pardoned Jan 6 violent rioters, and has even appointed one to a job with
the DOJ. Are we safer, or less safe? Trump is a convicted felon and is convicted of
many civil crimes, and has pardoned a great many of his fellow criminals often for
doing his bidding, undermining law and order. Trump trashes the American justice
system, from judges and lawyers and prosecutors, to juries and the FBI and
investigators, and even attempts to demonize whistle blowers. Is America safer, or
less safe?

Trump activated reservists and active-duty military supposedly to suppress violent
protests, and did so against the legal authorization of local state officials. One result
was the arrest of a veteran outside a federal building who went there on
appointment to try to sort out a benefits issue. Are veterans safer, or LESS safe?
Trump appointed RFK Jr. as America’s Health tzar, a man who is famously anti-vax
and anti-science; Among the HHS’s first actions was to wholesale fire scientists and
medical researchers. Are we safer, or LESS safe? Trump and HHS are attempting to
prevent medical scientists from publishing in medical journals. Are we safer, or
LESS safe?

These are just a few issues affecting American’s safety. It’s nearly impossible to
keep up with all the ways Trump is “affecting” our safety, as he “floods the zone”
with his Project 2025 restructuring of America. Perhaps MAGAs think it’s a fair
trade-off to lose rights, to be diminished, and to be less safe as long as people they
don’t like are being made to suffer.
