The Fairfield High School One Act Play Company will perform Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” for the public on Friday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
“The wit and splendor make this short adaptation a real treat of Shakespeare merrymaking,” director Susan Walsh said. “The plot and characters delightfully illustrated in Puck’s words, ‘What fools these
mortals be.’”
Tickets will be sold at the door and are $5.00 each for adults and students. Tickets for children under five years old are free.
“I like the costuming this year and all the special make up we get to do,” senior Anna Kaye Williams said. “It’s been different from earlier years because we’re doing a comedy, but I really like the change in genre.”
Jeff Wright and Walsh are the play directors. All of the cast and crew are high school students. The backstage manager is senior Mayra Soto.
“My favorite part of being the backstage manager is watching the actors fit into their roles before district,” Soto said. “I like how I can add my own flair to the production, too.”
This lyrical fantasy is set in the woods outside Vienna in the fairy kingdom of King Oberon and Queen Titania. King Oberon is at odds with his Queen, so he devises a clever plan to win her over, with the help of Puck, his mischievous servant, and the juice of a little purple flower.
“I feel like King Oberon fits really well with my personality,” senior Jack Ezell said. “Any year that I get the part I really worked for is an even better year.”
Puck happens to cross paths with a group of comic rustics rehearsing a play for the Duke and Duchess’ wedding festivities. The rustics’ attempt to perform, “Pyramus and Thisby”, before the Duke and his court, is a slapstick farce and is a delightful rendition of the ancient Greek tale of the two lovers.
Theater is a lot of work,” Walsh said. “Most people don’t realize what goes into a production. It takes everyone involved to make the show successful.”
