Thoughts from the Editor – Karen Leidy

Sad, excited, and maybe a little bit nauseous.

That was the first couple of hours following the final decision concerning the newspaper’s print operation.

Sad for letting go of this beautiful publication that I helped birth.

Excited for what lies ahead in my semi-retirement.

And, nauseous because, Oh. My. Gosh.

In so many ways, The Freestone County Times has been like one of my children.

I agonized over its creation, stood proud when it was embraced by the community, felt like kicking it out of the house a couple times when the stress got overwhelming, and then – when the time came to let go – felt all the emotions, all at once.

What keeps coming back to me are the people we have had come through our doors.

Our first two full-time reporters went on to become teachers.

Several interns completed college and established themselves in their individual fields.

Columnists are still actively contributing to their communities.

Small business owners, award-winning artists, editors, writers and more.

This small community newspaper taught, nurtured, and encouraged so many talented people.

And while it’s sad to close this particular chapter, I feel honored to have played our part in the lives of those who chose to lend their names to this “by the people, for the people” publication.

From the Content Manager – Nicole Schaefer

The end is here… but where do I begin?

Moving back home to Fairfield in 2009, and looking for a means of supporting myself, I began working at another paper in town, simply for the photography aspect.

During my short time there, I developed some writing skills and the Publisher of Freestone County Times, Scott Marsters, recognizing my talent, scooped me up to come work for him.

Over the years, and multiple times of being employed by The ‘Times’, I have grown to love journalism, something I never imagined I’d even like.

I’ve come to know more people around town and have even been referred to as ‘the camera lady’ by several.

I’ve made many acquaintances and friends over the years, but most importantly, I’ve found a second family in the Marsters (owners), Karen (editor), and Megan (previous co-worker).

I am so thankful to have been given a chance to grow in the business and to have a work schedule that fits my specific needs.

I’ve been reporter, photographer, ad builder, page layout, and content manager (and whatever else needs doing).

Change is hard, and I’m trying not to be too sad that the print edition is ending, but I am, however, looking forward to what the future holds. You can bet that you’ll still see me around.

Thank you, readers, for trusting me to accurately report on the events that matter. It has been a pleasure and an honor.

I can’t wait to continue serving the community with the online edition.
