On the evening of August 1, 2026, an Officer Involved Shooting occurred on FM 488, approximately three miles north of Fairfield city limits.
According to Freestone County Sheriff, Jeremy Shipley, around 7:30 p.m., a FCSO Deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle. The driver of said vehicle led the Deputy on a 26-minute pursuit, reaching speeds of more than 125 miles per hour.
The vehicle came to a stop on the side of the road on FM 488, just north of Fairfield.
Once stopped, a physical altercation ensued between the Deputy and the driver in which the Deputy discharged his firearm, subsequently resulting in a fatal wound.
Lifesaving measures were administered on the scene until EMS arrived. Fairfield EMS transported the suspect to Fairfield ER where he was pronounced deceased.
According to a press release from the FCSO, there were three passengers in the vehicle, none of which were injured.
The FCSO Deputy sustained minor injuries and was treated.
“The DPS Texas Rangers were contacted to conduct a complete and through investigation to ensure objective handling and neutral oversight regarding this officer involved shooting,” explains the press release.
There is no exact timeline for the completion of the investigation at this time. The FCSO asks for patience as the Texas Rangers work to determine all the facts surrounding this incident.
“The FCSO will remain focused on preserving public trust and continuing the work of having and keeping a safe community,” concluded Sheriff Shipley.
