The Wortham Bulldogs had their first lead of the season and did not let it slip away in a 36-0 in Meridian Friday night. The Bulldogs snap a six-game losing streak to begin the season.

Following a scoreless first quarter, the Bulldog defense made the first statement of the game.

Nathan Chasteen sliced in and recovered a fumble and set the Bulldogs at the Yellowjacket 47-yard line.

Darrius Credeur had both carries of the drive, the second on a 35-yard touchdown run, the longest for the Bulldogs this season. Credeur added the conversion run and the Bulldogs led 8-0.

The Bulldogs took the ball back when Meridian fumbled the kickoff and Credeur recovered the kick, and the Bulldogs took over at the Yellowjacket 32. The Wortham offense drive lasted six plays, all on the ground, the last play on a quarterback keeper by Trynen Cawthorn from four yards away. The conversion was no good and the Bulldogs led 14-0 heading into the half.

Wortham opened the second half with a quick position and Darrius Credeur’s big night would continue. He took the handoff and raced 66 yards, the longest play for the Bulldogs this season, and the lead grew to a comfortable 22-0 following the Evan McCoslin conversion run.

When the Yellowjackets pass fell incomplete at the Wortham 26, the Bulldogs began for the clinching score of the game. They marched 76 yards in 11 plays and McCoslin had a 28-yard run and caught a 16-yard pass to convert a third down. McCoslin scored on a three-yard run to extend the lead to 28-0 late in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs put one more score on the board early in the fourth quarter. Cody King broke away on a 44-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring on the night. Credeur ran in the conversion to close out the 36-0 win.

On the season, the Bulldogs had scored only 14 points but exploded for 36 in the shutout win.

Wortham will return home for a key district game against the Goldthwaite Eagles. It is homecoming in Wortham so it will be great to make new connections with old friends.
