The Fairfield Eagles built a big halftime lead and made it hold up as they cruised to a 63-21 win over the Buffalo Bison at Eagle Stadium Friday night to remain unbeaten on the season.
The Fairfield defense set the tone early when on the third play from scrimmage, Kalil Appel ran down Buffalo quarterback Mason Nedbalek and forced a fumble and the Eagles began with a short field.
Eagle quarterback Kohl Collins passed to Connor Colvert to the five and Jason Brackens did the rest with a five-yard touchdown run and the early 7-0 lead after the King point after.
It took only one play for the Eagles to add to the lead after a Buffalo punt. Collins connected with Colvert for the 48-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead still early in the first quarter.
Buffalo missed on a fourth down and the ball went over to the Eagle offense. Collins was three of four passing on the drive, the final for an 11-yard touchdown and the Eagles led 21-0 after one.
The Bison scored on the first play of the second quarter on a long pass to Donte Lott from Nedbalek covering 63 yards and cut the lead to 21-7.
The Eagles turned the ball over for the second of three times in the first half and the Bison could not move into scoring position, turning it over on a missed fourth down.
Fairfield took advantage of a short punt and began in Bison territory. They needed only four plays, all on the ground and Brackens raced up field for the touchdown and 28-7 lead. He would add a two-yard score and Nedbalek scored on a short run for Buffalo to close the half with Fairfield leading 35-14.
Khamrion Ingram scored to open the second half and the game looked to be a runaway and the lead swelled to 42-14. Finn Smith was a bit quiet on the offensive side of the ball but made his highlight with a spectacular punt return covering 52 yards and the 49-14 lead.
Buffalo added a touchdown pass and Fairfield put two more scores on the board as some reserves came in and saw action. The effort on both sides of the ball did not let up with shining defensive plays and Landon Washington operating the Eagle offense. Ingram added two touchdown runs and finished with a big night in mop up duty with three touchdowns on the evening.
Fairfield (3-0) will have its final non-district game at home against the McGregor Bulldogs on Friday night.
