WHS hosts inaugural 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

Wortham High School launched a powerful new tradition last Thursday, Sept. 11, as the community gathered for the 1st Annual WHS Fire Academy 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, a solemn, high-expectations tribute to the heroes lost on September 11, 2001.

Throughout the day, students from Wortham ISD, Teague ISD, and Coolidge ISD, alongside WHS staff and firefighters from Corsicana Fire Department, Arlington Fire Department, Teague Volunteer Fire Department and Wortham VFD climbed stairs in remembrance. All WHS Fire Cadets and EMT students took part, demonstrating the discipline and heart that define the academy. In an inspiring display of commitment, a large group of firefighters and cadets completed all 110 flights, a symbolic reflection of the 110 floors climbed by first responders at the World Trade Center.

WHS offered a huge shoutout to everyone who participated and supported the event, emphasizing deep gratitude for the regional partnership and the professionalism modeled by visiting departments. The day’s purpose was clear: honor the fallen, elevate student character, and strengthen the bond between schools and first responders.

“This climb is about remembrance and responsibility,” JP Manley, WHS Fire Academy Instructor noted. “Our students learn that courage, service, and teamwork are not just words, they’re actions. We are very grateful for the support shown by our neighbors and our partner departments.”

Beyond remembrance, the climb showcased the vision of the WHS Fire Academy: rigorous training, strong character, and community service. With students and staff stepping up, literally and figuratively, the event reinforced the message that small schools can do big things when expectations are high and partnerships are strong. Mr. Manley also got the chance to explain the importance of the event to numerous Wortham Elementary and Junior High students.

WHS plans to continue the Memorial Stair Climb as an annual tradition, inviting students, families, and first responders to stand united in remembrance and resolve. As the academy’s message echoed throughout the day: Let’s never forget.
