The Valley Mills Eagles built a 21-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 39-0 win in the season opener over the Wortham Bulldogs at Bulldog Stadium Friday night.
Many of the starters for the Bulldogs were new or in new positions after losing 15 seniors off of the 2024 team.
The Eagles took the first possession of the evening and needed only a couple of minutes to score. Senior running back Jasean Johnson ran for 15 yards and quarterback Blayne Griner passed to Andrew Rodriguez for a 38-yard touchdown and a lead they would not give up the remainder of the night. The point after was good and the Valley Mills Eagles led 7-0.
Wortham stalled on their first drive and punted, and the Bulldog defense forced a turnover on downs in the final minutes of the first quarter.
Valley Mills scored at the end of the quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass to Johnson from Griner and the 14-0 lead.
The Bulldogs had one of their best drives of the night to open the second quarter. They went 65 yards on seven carries but fumbled the ball away at the Eagle three-yard line.
The Eagles would add one more score before the end of the half. Johnson bulldozed his way in from three yards out and the point after put the Eagles lead at 21-0. This finished off a 95-yard drive scoring on a Bulldog turnover.
Valley Mills intercepted a Bulldog pass and started deep in Wortham territory. Johnson capped of the 24-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run and extended the lead to 27-0 after the failed extra point.
The Eagles added two more scores, the first a 26-yard touchdown run by Bryson Bell and the second on a Griner three-yard run. Blake Hadden and Maddox Duke blocked the extra points, respectively and the final score would be 39-0.
Johnson ended the night with 141 rushing yards and two touchdowns and one more receiving.
Wortham will remain at home this week and they will host the Rio Vista Eagles the walls of historic Bulldog Stadium.
