The Fairfield Eagles opened up a 23-0 halftime lead and grabbed a convincing home win in their season opener. The Eagles ran past the Maypearl Panthers 51-13 at Eagle Stadium.
The Eagle offense has been the highlighted point for the opening of the season, but it was the defense that showed strength early and often. They held the Panthers off the scoreboard until late in the third quarter and maintained a huge lead throughout the night.
The teams exchanged possessions to begin the game. Fairfield had their first takeaway on the second play from scrimmage on a fumble caused by defender Kalil Appel at the Fairfield 42-yard line.

The Eagles took the ball and marched downfield in seven plays and the drive stalled on a missed third down. Quarterback Kohl Collins dropped back in punt formation and hit a beauty that was downed inside the Maypearl one yard line.
On the first play from scrimmage following the punt, Maypearl running back Collin Brooks took the handoff and was smothered by the Eagle defense behind the line of scrimmage, led by Appel. The play resulted in a Fairfield safety and the Eagles led 2-0 midway through the first quarter.
Fairfield took advantage of the free kick and turned that into more points to add to the lead.

Jason Brackens returned the kick for 20 yards and then a Maypearl player was called for a late hit, so the Eagles started at the Maypearl 33. Khamarion Ingram carried the ball for the only three plays of the drive, the last for a three-yard touchdown. Kieran King added the extra point, and the Eagle lead grew to 9-0.
Near the end of the first quarter, the Panther offense missed on a fake punt and Fairfield took over a midfield. Fairfield went back to work, and Collins connected with Finn Smith for a 15-yard gain inside the Maypearl 20. The Eagles chipped away and finished with a Brackens one yard plunge into the endzone. King added the extra point and the Eagles led 16-0.
Into the second quarter, the Panthers put together an effective drive and reached the Fairfield 20. Madden McElroy stepped in front of a pass and ended the drive for the Panthers. Fairfield began another drive at midfield and needed only three plays. Collins found Smith running down the far sideline and hit him in stride for the 42-yard touchdown and the 23-0 lead that would take them into the halftime break.
The Eagle defense forced a three and out for the first possession of the second half and then the offense took control of the game. The ground attack led the way, and the offensive line paved the road for the Fairfield offense. The drive consumed ten plays and 59 yards and was finished with Ingram scoring his second touchdown of the game on a two-yard run. King added the point after for the 30-0 lead.

Brooks had a big return for the Panthers on the kickoff, and they started a midfield. On the second play of the possession, the ball was snapped past the quarterback and then kicked downfield.
Fairfield recovered deep in Panther territory, but the possession was moved back to the Panther 49 following a penalty. The Eagles wasted no time putting that third turnover on the scoreboard. Brackens ripped off a 25-yard run and quick pass to Kaden McCrory put the Eagles inside the Maypearl 10. Kyden Rodriguez took care of the rest with a nine-yard run for the Eagle touchdown. The lead swelled to 37-0 on the King point after.

Brooks had another long kickoff return of 60 yards and Maypearl had good field position. The quick drive ended with a 34-yard touchdown pass and cut the lead to 37-7.
Rodriguez scored a fourth quarter touchdown, and the Eagles allowed a score midway through the fourth and set the final score at 51-13.
The Fairfield Eagles take to the road next week and will cross over to the next county to take on the Mexia Blackcats on Friday night.
