Billy Roy Dawson, 83, of Dew Texas passed away Sunday, April 27, 2025 peacefully in his home, with his wife and daughters at his bedside.
Billy Roy married his beautiful bride, Alice Fay Price on July 12, 1957, at the age of 15. They shared 67 years building a life together filled with countless memories that his family will cherish forever.
Billy Roy was a member of the Lanely Methodist Church most of his life. He later went on to lead Sunday morning worship at the Cowboy Heritage Church of Freestone County for 6 years, Wednesday night worship at Cedar Stone and was part of the worship team at Freestone Cowboy Church until covid hit.
Billy Roy had a love for music at an early age, receiving his first guitar at the age of 4, and playing his first song at the age of 5 or 6, There wasn’t an instrument he couldn’t play, but mostly remembered for his guitar skills and tinkling the piano keys. No matter where he went if there was a piano there, he was asked to play and he always obliged. His parents paid for music lessons, but after several lessons the teacher gave up and told his mother that she couldn’t teach him because he had his own way of playing,
In his early adult years, he had an opportunity to travel and play with a band, but he chose to stay home and raise his family instead. Family was very important to him.
Billy Roy was one of the hardest working men, he was always doing something. If he wasn’t on the job, he was working at home or helping family and friends. He was also a perfectionist and everything he did, he gave his all and didn’t quit until it was ‘right’. He came from an era where your word and a handshake was all you needed. He taught his kids that your word and your work was a reflection of who you are. If you say you’re gonna be there, “Be there”! And if you say your gonna do it, “Do it”, and do it to the best of your ability.
His deep infectious laugh was one of his many traits people will remember him by. Along with his musical talent, restoring old homes to their original beauty and his “curl” that he called his ‘girl catcher!
Music was a big part of our life. I don’t remember many family get togethers that he didn’t play his guitar or piano as we all gathered around to sing. He recorded over 50 cd l s. We called him a ‘one man’ band as he played every instrument recorded and even sang his own back up and harmony.
Billy Roy and his wife loved to travel. On many of those trips they were looking for old run down home, that most of us would have torn down and started over. But they could always see the vision of its original beauty, and within months, everyone else could see it too. They restored over 20+ homes in their lifetime.
Billy Roy lived his life as an example for his family and he will be greatly missed by all those that love him.
He was born May 3, 1941, to Roy and Hazel (Foster) Dawson in Leon County.
