“I really want to thank the Freestone County Historical Commission for their support and assistance in getting the County this grant,” explains County Court Assistant, Karen Moore, at the February 5, 2025, meeting of the Freestone County Commissioners Court.

After much research, and $200,000 spent for plans, architect fees, and application fees, Freestone County has received a full restoration grant for the County Courthouse from Texas Historical Commission in the amount of $6,379,490.00.

The County’s match on this grant is 12%, which will be $859,928.00. The normal match for this grant is 15%, but the Texas Historical Commission took into consideration that the County self-funded the planning process.

This grant is for a full restoration of the courthouse, meaning the entire courthouse will be restored to how it was in 1921, apart from modern features such as A/C, electrical components, plumbing and ADA Compliance protocols.

“I was told that we received this grant because we already had our master plan together and are shovel ready,” explains Freestone County Historical Commission (FCHC) Secretary, Angela Oglesbee.

“We were happy to help see this process through,” says FCHC Chairman, Wiliam Shelton. “I can’t wait to celebration the completion of the restoration!”

It is unknown at this point when work will commence nor when it will be completed.
