Freestone Medical Center (FMC) announces the arrival of their newest technological upgrade, the Hologic Dimension Mammography machine.
This machine allows doctors to examine the breast tissue layer by layer. So, instead of viewing all the complexities of the breast as a flat image, as with a conventional 2D machine, fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below.
More than 200 clinical studies have shown that by using this technology, doctors are able to screen for breast cancer with much more accuracy, regardless of a woman’s age or breast density.
3D mammograms are more accurate than 2D scans and can detect cancer at an earlier stage. They also emit a lower level or radiation and are designed to be more comfortable for the patient.
While the 3D mammograms are becoming more common, they are not available at all hospitals and mammogram facilities.
Women in and around Freestone County no longer must travel long distances or wait for the once-a-year 3D Mobile Mammo Bus to receive proper care. They now have access right here at home.
Why should you or a loved one get screened? One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Eight out of nine women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history, but with early detection, the five-year survival rate it almost 100%.
The Fairfield Hospital District Board purchased the machine for FMC, which arrived mid-September. Director of Radiology, Amy Barlow, received her education and accreditation to perform the Hologic Dimension Mammography exam and is now ready to provide her patients with top tier care.
