The Wortham Bulldogs built a 20-0 lead at the half, and it held up for a 36-14 win over the Rosebud-Lott Cougars at Bulldog Stadium and improved to 2-0 on the season.
Wortham controlled the ball with 62 offensive plays and 35 minutes time of possession. Rosebud-Lott ran only 25 offensive plays and had 13 minutes of offensive possession. The Cougars had three yards rushing on the night with the Wortham Bulldogs dominating their side of the ball.
The Cougars were pinned deep on the opening kickoff and were forced to punt. The Bulldogs began their first possession on the Cougar 44. Seven offensive plays, all on the ground, put the Bulldogs ahead with a five-yard Yancey Bean touchdown run. Jon Ross Black added the conversion run and the 8-0 lead.
The Wortham defense showed their merit on the next possession. Again, forced to punt, defensive lineman Anthony Fortoul forced his way through and blocked the kick. He also scooped it up and rumbled 16 yards for the touchdown with 3:11 remaining in the first quarter. The conversion run was short, and the Bulldogs led 14-0.
Rosebud-Lott intercepted a pass on fourth down at their own four, stopping a Wortham drive. The Cougars could not move out past the 15 and punted it back to the Bulldogs.
Wortham marched 42 yards and used all but sixteen seconds of the remaining 6:14 of the game clock and scored on a pass from Black to Cash Perez in the back of the endzone. The conversion was no good and the Bulldogs led 20-0 at the half.
The Bulldogs first drive of the second half stalled and a short punt put the Cougars at their 31-yard line. Cougar quarterback Pryce Rabroker threw over the top to Carson Kahlig and he raced for the 69-yard touchdown. The extra point cut the Bulldog lead to 20-7.
The Bulldogs took the ball and used seven minutes and in 11 plays went 74 yards. Black threw across the middle and hit tight end James Johnson with the 18-yard touchdown and Jesse Saldana added the conversion run for the 28-7 lead.
The Cougars were intercepted by Javier Contreras on their final snap of the third quarter. Rosebud-Lott ran four plays and possessed the ball for a total of 25 seconds in the quarter.
Yancey Bean scored on a 14-yard touchdown early in the fourth and the Cougars answered with a touchdown pass late but the Bulldogs defensive domination was too much, and it preserved the win.
Bean rushed for 122 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Bulldogs, and they will take to the road and play the Leon Cougars on Friday night.
