Otto Carroll Martin, 89, of Fairfield, Texas passed from this life on Wednesday evening, August 23, 2023, at his home. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 2-3pm at Griffin – Roughton Funeral Home in Fairfield. A Celebration of Life will follow at 3pm in the chapel. Burial will be at a later date at Omaha Cemetery in Omaha, Texas. Honorary pallbearers will be James Tyus, Rich Schaufert, Davy Reed, Sid Stroud and Kenny Waters.
Carroll was born in Bryan, County Oklahoma on May 28, 1934, to Eurrie Virgil Martin and Muriel Brown Martin. Growing up on a farm where he learned the value of hard work and taking care of those around you. He worked as a communication technician retiring with Verizon in 1989. Through the years he made his mark in the Fairfield Community by at some point from the 1960’s – 1990’s working on televisions. He and his wife Wilma were very involved in First Baptist Church in Fairfield especially in the 70’s in the youth group and the choir. He was known as the “Candy Man” always having candy to give away. They both loved to travel and visited all fifty states and all seven continents over the years. Carroll and Wilma were inseparable, were you saw one you saw the other. He loved to go out to eat and take family and friends with him. If you could use on word to describe him, it would be “giver”. He was always giving people flowers, candy or any other gesture of kindness he could to let people know he cared for them.
He is preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Muriel Martin. Brothers Von Lee Martin, Marian Martin and Mikel Martin. The love of his life and soulmate Wilma Jean Martin who passed away in February of this year. He is survived by his daughter of the heart Donna Tyus. Sister Glenna Allen of Round Rock. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of people he touched over the years.
