November and December were very busy months for the Jonathan Hardin Chapter of the DAR!

Entertainment during Veterans Luncheon.

On November 9th the chapter held a luncheon at the First Baptist Church Teague Fellowship Hall for area veterans in celebration of Veterans Day. Approximately 40 veterans attended along with their family members and chapter members and enjoyed a delicious barbeque lunch and music from local band Highway 19. After lunch Mr. Lee Kirgan with Operation Finally Home spoke to the group about his organization’s wonderful work providing homes for deserving veterans.

At the December 7th meeting at Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia, the chapter heard a wonderful and informative account of the events at Pearl Harbor in 1941 from Mrs. Patricia Thibodeau, an Air Force and Vietnam veteran and member of the Richard Bard Chapter DAR in Mesquite.

This was such a great date to hear about the events at Pearl Harbor as it was on Pearl Harbor Day. New member Susan Rankin was sworn into our chapter as well. Additionally, several door prizes were awarded.

On December 17th, the Jonathan Hardin Chapter sponsored two cemeteries for Wreaths Across America. Beth Harrison, member and veteran, spearheaded this great effort. The chapter held ceremonies at both LaSalle Cemetery in Limestone County and Driver Cemetery in Freestone County. Wreaths were laid at 41 graves at LaSalle and 88 graves at Driver. Members from Jonathan Hardin assisted in the ceremonies, as well as the Young Marines from Groesbeck High School, members of the American Legion Post 288 in Groesbeck, cemetery directors Bubba McDonald of LaSalle and Jaylee Cleveland of Driver, and several community members and young people from the area. Wreaths Across America held ceremonies in about 3400 locations across the United States on this day. Thanks to all who participated!
