School campuses in Freestone County were closed at least three days last week due to the winter storm with icy road conditions. Basketball games and other after school activities were either cancelled or rescheduled.
Most schools resumed classes Friday morning, February 3, 2023 with Teague ISD beginning at normal hours; Fairfield ISD and Wortham ISD beginning with a two-hour delay.
Continued power outage kept Dew ISD, Faith Academy of Freestone, and Teague Elementary school campus closed on Friday, with classes resuming Monday morning, February 6th.
However, that did not stop the popular Daddy / Daughter Dance from going on, after moving the event’s location to the Teague High School cafeteria.
Organizers even arranged an area for the young ladies to do their hair, prior to the event, for those who were still without power at home.
Warming centers were set up in three Freestone County locations: the Senior Center in Fairfield, Community Center in Teague, and the Community Life Center at First Baptist in Wortham.
Both City and County road crews worked diligently to clear road ways, as the weight of the ice cause breaking limbs and downed trees.
Residents did the same as arrangements were made for disposal.
City of Fairfield announced on Monday that their City Dump would be open all this week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for free brush dumping. Resident are asked to bring their most current water bill.
If you do not have a current water bill, please stop by Fairfield City Hall at 425 W. Commerce Street for your free brush pass.
City of Teague provided residents a place to drop of brush and limbs this past Saturday at the BTW park.
City of Wortham set up a place for residents to dispose of broken limbs in a lot beside the park on FM 27. One resident jokingly asked on social media if there were future plans for a large bonfire.
Many were also left without electricity and heat during last week’s ice storm, due to the significant tree damage, which either fell on or came into contact with electric lines.
According to Oncor, who serves much of the Freestone County area, stated at press time that service has been restored for the vast majority of their customers. “Oncor teams continue to work 24/7 in communities still experiencing outage impacts.”
The Oncor outage also impacted customers of Turlington Water Supply Corporation, as the system was without power for about three days, leaving those residents without water. Once power was restored late Friday night, water flowed once again.
According to Oncor’s storm center map on Monday, outages were still reporting for 41 customers in the Fairfield area, 1 south of Fairfield, 1 in Dew and 1 west of Teague. Service was estimated to be back on by Monday evening in those areas.
If you are still experiencing an outage, please report it by visiting Oncor.com, texting “OUT” to 66267, downloading the MyOncor app or by calling 888-313-4747.
