On October 13, 2022, Trinity Star Arts Council (TSAC) will present original works by textile artist Laverne Brackens in an exhibition entitled Art of the Quilt.
Ms. Brackens, a native of Freestone County, is among four generations of family quiltmakers and is known for her improvisational designs using vibrant colors and unique layout ideas.
Calling them “Quilts of Color,” she has chosen this to name her quilt-making business.
“I don’t go by patterns,” says Ms. Brackens. “I make it up out of my head.”
The result is extraordinary and interesting quilt designs.
Quilt scholar Eli Leon has named her technique “accidentally on purpose.”
These distinctive quilts, for which Ms. Brackens has received many honors, have been featured in numerous exhibitions and documented in several publications throughout the country.
One of her most outstanding honors was being awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment of the Arts.
Several of Ms. Brackens’ quilts will be on display Thursday, October 13, in an opening reception 5:00-8:00pm at Williford Foundation for American Art, 116 N. Mount in Fairfield. Music provided by Katelyn Bailey, Cellist.
