The Malakoff Tigers took a quick 14-0 lead and cruised to a 38-0 win over the Teague Lions to remain on top of the District 8-3A Division I standings.
The Tigers have not been scored on for the second straight week and have not allowed a point in district play.
The Tigers forced an early punt and they went to work on offense. Duce Hart, Jr. had a pair of runs for first downs to the Lion 26-yard line.
Senior quarterback Judson Driskell found Austin Massingill on the slant pattern for a 16-yard touchdown and the early 7-0 lead.
Malakoff took over deep in Teague territory on their second possession when Zack Studley intercepted a Luke Stacks pass and returned it to the Teague 22-yard line. Driskell completed a pass to Massingill for a 15-yard touchdown in the game and the Juan Gonzalez extra point gave the Tigers a 14-0 lead.
The Lion defense stepped up and made a stop on the Malakoff offense. The Tigers moved inside the Teague 20-yard line and faced a third and long. Malakoff ran a middle screen pass and Emaje Holmes raced in and made the big hit to stop the Tiger offense.
Teague would take over and make a threat to get on the scoreboard. On third and 11 at their 32-yard line, Stacks was forced to scramble and threw a pass downfield that was tipped by receiver Tylin Randle and into the hands of Jarrett Bodine for a first down to the Malakoff 25-yard line. Kymani Johnson was stopped for a no gain and then Stacks scrambled for a seven-yard gain inside the Tiger 20. Jehmel Rice rushed for 17 yards and a first down at the Tiger three. Four tries inside the five ended in a turnover on downs for the Teague offense.
All smiles is Teague Band Director, Cory Hiles, getting the Mighty Lion Band set up for their half-time performance last week. The students went on to earn all 1’s the following day at the UIL 3A Region 8 Marching Band competition at McGregor High School. The Tiger defense recovered a fumble at the Teague 24 and needed only one play. Hart scored on the touchdown run to lead 21-0. The Lions lost a second fumble and Hart added his second touchdown run to extend the lead to 28-0.
The Teague defense had a couple of takeaways on the night when Holmes got a second big hit that forced a fumble and Casen Gore recovered. The Lions could not move offensively and would turn the ball over on downs.
The Tigers would add a 17-yard run and Gonzalez added a short field goal to set the final score of 35-0.
The Teague Lions will travel down the highway a short distance to battle the Fairfield Eagles in the important battle of Freestone County, perhaps an even more important District 8-3A Division I game. Malakoff returns home to host the Groesbeck Goats in the game featuring the top two teams in the district tied at 2-0.
