The Hillsboro Eagles took a 29-7 lead and made it hold up through a scoreless second half to defeat the Teague Lions in Hillsboro Friday night.
The Lions finish the non-district portion of their schedule at 1-4 and they will enter the bye week before beginning district 8-3A Division I play at Kemp on October 8. The district looks wide open for the final two playoff spots, behind frontrunners Malakoff and Groesbeck.
The Lions struggled offensively and needed to stop the big play offense of Hillsboro. The running of Francisco Montoya and Tory Brooks put the Eagles in several scoring situations.
Korey Silar and Juan Bernal made a couple of touchdown saving tackles to lead the Lion defense, which has played aggressive over the last couple of games and should be ready for district play following the tough non-district set of games.
Montoya had a 40-yard run to the one-yard line to lead to the first touchdown of the night and give the Eagles a lead they would hold the remainder of the game. Deaundre Sanders had a big run deep into Teague territory and would finish a drive with a ten-yard touchdown run.
The Teague defense put points on the board for second straight week. The defensive front broke through and blocked a Hillsboro punt. Korey Silar covered the loose ball in the endzone for the touchdown early in the game. Henry Cardona added the point after to account for the Teague points on the night.
The Eagles tallied 22 points in the second quarter and led 29-7 at the half. The second half was scoreless and both teams were unable to get into the endzone the remainder of the contest.
