The Teague Lions held the Mart Panthers scoreless for the first quarter but the Panthers scored 20 in the second and pulled away in the home opener of the season with a 48-0 loss.
Teague had a stop on the first Mart possession and on the second try, senior quarterback Keishawn Clater had a keeper for a 74-yard touchdown run, however it was called back on a holding penalty. The Panther drive stalled and Juan Bernal had a 19-yard punt return set the Lions in great field position. Teague converted a key first down on a pass down the far sideline and Luke Stacks hit Jarrett Bodine. Bodine made the one-handed catch at the Mart 21-yard line midway through the first quarter. The drive would end on downs with a couple of pass attempts later in the quarter.
The scoring drought would end when the Panthers converted their next possession. Clater found daylight and scored on a 12-yard run with 10:59 remaining in the first half. Armando Chavez added the point after for the 7-0 lead.
Teague ended their next drive with a special teams mishap on a blocked punt. The punt cleared the line of scrimmage but it was less than five yards and the Panther were set up deep in Teague territory. With 9:24 remaining, Klyderion Campbell scored on an 11-yard scamper. The kick hit the left upright and bounded away and the lead held at 13-0.
The Lions found some offensive spark with the running game. Stacks took off on a quarterback keeper up the near sideline. After running 30 yards, Clater jumped on his shoulders and Stacks carried him for 20 more yards to the Panther 20. The Lions set up a first and goal midway through the quarter, but Stacks was picked off by Dominic Medlock and the drive ended.
Mart would add to their lead with four minutes remaining in the half when Neven Hickman scored on a 42-yard touchdown run on the jet sweep. Chavez added the extra point for the 20-0 lead heading into the locker room.
The Panthers would three more touchdowns in the third quarter. Mart would score on their first possession of the second half when Clater went to the air for a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Ross. He connected with Campbell midway through the quarter for a 21-yard score.
Ross finished the quarter scoring on a 20-yard run and the Panthers led 41-0.
Mart added a final touchdown with the reserves in the game when backup quarterback Trey Powell kept the ball on the lead option and scored on a 10-yard touchdown run. The extra point capped the scoring, securing a 48-0 lead for the Mart Panthers.
The Teague Lions take the long non-district trip to Lago Vista to take on the Vikings and Mart will host the McGregor Bulldogs in their home opener.
