Members and friends of the Let’s Travel Club spent a beautiful day last Saturday watching the horses run. A visit to Lone Star Park was timed just right for sunshine and thoroughbreds.

After a misty beginning of the day, the sun came out by the time the group arrived at the park in Grand Prairie. There was plenty of time to get settled in their seats with concession food and drink along with the day’s schedule of races before the trumpet blew announcing the first race.

Speaking of “trumpet,” the group had a special visit by the Lone Star Park trumpeter, Shane Wigley. Shane is a graduate of Mexia High School and a classmate of a member of the group, Kyle Newberry. Shane played “Deep in the Heart of Texas” for everyone while the spectators clapped at the appropriate times. He returned for a second visit to play “Happy Birthday” to Kyle as the travel group sang along.
Everyone enjoyed watching the horses run and appreciated the time and talents spent training the horses and getting them ready to perform.
Making the day trip were: Leslie Avery, Catherine Ethridge, Charlene Ezell, Loy Newberry, Richard O’Dell, Hazel Sanders, Ed and Alicia Smith, Sue Terry, Emilee Terry, Jerry and Mary White from Fairfield; Anita Avery, Debra Wood from Streetman; Mike and Denise Pike from Palestine; Alicia Hall from Groesbeck; Donna Chambers from Crockett; Carolyn Hancock from Mexia; Sally and Dustin Wilkerson from Thornton; Jackie Pickens, Ruth Pickens, Darlene Strickland from Dew. The following members of Loy Newberry’s family met us at the park: Cyndi Plant, Vonda Posey from Carrollton; Ben and Amanda Forrest from Dallas; Kyle and Ashley Newberry from Arlington.

A few plans remain on the calendar for 2021. A trip to Oklahoma to visit Pioneer Woman Mercantile is planned for September. Then, in October there is a Collette tour Bluegrass Country and the Smoky Mountains scheduled. Preliminary plans are in the making for a November bus trip to Branson to see the musical Jesus at the Sight and Sound Theater.
