Wilbur Elbert Roberts, 99, of the Lanely Community left earth for the promised land of his Lord Jesus Christ to be with his Lord and also with his wife of 74 years who he has tremendously missed for the last three months on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in Palestine.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Capps Memorial Chapel with his son-in-law, Jodie Sanders officiating. Interment was in Lake Chapel Cemetery.
He was born April 4, 1921 in Carvel, Colorado to parents Noah and Ada Asher Roberts. The oldest of nine children; five boys and four girls, he moved to Missouri when he was four; this is where he lived his young adult life. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on September 12, 1942 and was sent to Europe during WWII. He received three bronze stars and a purple heart during the war. He was discharged November 21, 1945. He returned to Missouri after the war and married his wife Lessie Clark, they moved to the Galveston area where he obtained a job with Carbide. He was Born Again at the age of 35 and served as deacon in First Baptist Church of Hitchcock. Upon retirement after 33 years with Carbide they moved to a lot on Lake Livingston where they lived 20 plus years. He was a deacon and Bible teacher at Calvary Baptist Church of Trinity. Due to age they moved to Lanely and lived there for 11 years where they were members of First Baptist Church of Fairfield. In 2018 they decided to go into Cartmell Nursing Facility in Palestine where they spent their final days. Poppy will be sincerely missed by his children and grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Lessie in October of 2020, four brothers and one sister.
Left to cherish his memory are three children, Sue Sanders and husband Jodie of Lanely; Johnny Roberts and wife Jo of Lovelady, TX; Mary Thorn and husband Bob of Nashville, TN; three sisters; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
