More Momma cows have lost their babies these last two weeks. I am sure they tell their calves to lie down and stay there until they come to get them. Then, the Mommas go off and feed their faces, visit with the other “girls” and forget all about their baby. In the meantime, the baby calf has awakened from a nap, is hungry and can’t see its’ Momma anyplace. So, being the good little calf, they just lie back down and hope Momma comes soon.
Then we look out the window and see a Momma walking around the back yard, having come out of the Personal Grove, and they begin bellering for their baby! They forgot where they placed them to begin with, wonder why the calf doesn’t come when they call, (because they were told to stay put), and if it is a first baby, the Momma suddenly realizes, “what me, I have a baby?”
When the baby calf is found, it is so sweet to see the two. Usually, the Momma licks the baby to make sure it belongs to her I guess, and the baby jumps and runs and stays very close to its’ Momma. Scenes like this make us realize that Mommas, even if they are cows, love their little ones…especially at the Red Oak Ranch.
