During the month of September, the Fairfield Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, remembers our country’s POW’s (prisoners of war) and our country’s MIA’s (those missing in action). It is our solemn duty to support all U.S. military personnel who served in conflicts in foreign lands and were captured and held prisoner or who went missing in combat. Our local post supports a constant effort on the national level to account for all of our troops whose fate was unknown and who never returned from the combat zones of our various wars.
In 1979, the US Congress passed a resolution that the third Friday of every September should be designated National POW/MIA Remembrance Day. However, the concern for the fate of these missing troops is ever uppermost in the minds of Fairfield VFW Post members throughout the entire year and especially so in the month of September.
We urge all citizens of Freestone County to stand with our Post as we salute the U.S. Flag as well as render honors to the POW/MIA Flag. The black background and white lettering “You Are Not Forgotten” on the original POW/MIA flag was meant to symbolize hope and our nation’s commitment to account for US combat personnel held on enemy soil or missing in action. By helping to fund National VFW programs, the Fairfield VFW supports this national effort to repatriate (bring them home) to the maximum extent possible.
