The Fairfield Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, presented a plaque and a monetary award to Ben Havens, a senior at Wortham High School. Ben competed in the “Voice of Democracy” contest in which all 9th through 12th grade students were invited to write an essay on the topic “What Makes America Great” and submit a recording of the reading of the essay to the nearest local VFW Post.

Ben’s essay and recording were rated outstanding by the Fairfield VFW Post 5872 and deemed to be the best of all entries received in Fairfield. As winner of the Fairfield Post contest, his theme paper was submitted to the District level of VFW where it was judged to be superior to all entries from seven other VFW posts and thereby was declared the winner of District # 29 competition. As such, his work was forwarded to State VFW Headquarters in Austin for State competition.

Ben and his proud parents, John and Katherine Havens, were guests of Fairfield VFW when the Post met on September 1 at Sam’s Restaurant. All Post members were very pleased to meet such a patriotic and skillful youngster, and they were glad to congratulate his parents on having raised such a fine young man.
