Billy Newman Scruggs, 88, of Fairfield, passed away at Teague Nursing and Rehab on April 17, 2020. Graveside services were held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in the Turlington Community near Fairfield with Rev. Chris George officiating.
Mr. Scruggs was born in the Turlington Community on Feb. 21, 1932 to John Carter Scruggs and Sarah (Burton) Scruggs. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. Following military service, he worked for Red Ball Freight Lines out of Dallas. From there he moved to Farmington New Mexico for years before returning to Fairfield. Mr. Scruggs loved to garden and work in his yard. He also enjoyed talking about the life he had as a child and what happened to all of his siblings. He and Doris recently joined Round Prairie Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Wilbur H. Bailey Post #5872, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Fairfield.
In addition to his parents Billy was preceded in death four sisters, Lizzie Crouch of Corsicana; Mary Lee Landry; Jewel Morris and Ellen Gunter all of Fairfield; two brothers, Carter Scruggs of Durango Colorado and Clarence Scruggs of Fairfield.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Doris Scruggs; a son Chris Scruggs of Fairfield; a daughter, Vicki Terry of Spring, TX; a brother, Clinton Scruggs of Teague; three sisters Fay Ward and Sarah Poteet of Fairfield and Grace Pannell of Fort Collins, Colorado. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Ciara and one great-granddaughter, Brielle.
