Winners from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s 2020 Quilt Contest were announced Monday, March 2nd. They include Molly Fryer of Freestone County for her entry, “This Old Quilt.”
More than 60 entries were received from quilters who reside in the designated 68 Area Go Texan counties and Houston-Area counties.
Ribbons were awarded in multiple categories, including Overall Best of Show, Best of Division, Best of Go Texan Award and Judges Choice, among others.
Fryer received a Blue Ribbon and earned Best of Division: Machine Mixed Technique.
Also winning Blue Ribbon and Best of Division was Joyce Hervey of Leon County for her Machine Pictorial, “My Daughter’s Library.”
Katelyn Wigington of Navarro County received a Red Ribbon for her piece, “Baltimore.”
Receiving a White Ribbon was “Star of the Sea” pieced by Carol Ann Dawley and quilted by Kathy at K & G Creative Quilts, representing Limestone County.

The winning quilts were to be showcased during the 2020 Rodeo, March 3 – 22. However, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, this annual event has been canceled.
” In the interest of public health, the City of Houston and the Houston Health Department have ordered the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ to close. The Rodeo will respectfully and dutifully comply with the City’s order,” read an official statement from organizers.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo promotes agriculture by hosting an annual, family-friendly experience that educates and entertains the public, supports Texas youth, showcases Western heritage and provides year-round educational support within the community. Since its beginning in 1932, the Rodeo has committed more than $500 million to the youth of Texas.
