Teague, Texas had a peace officer involved shooting Thursday morning, September 5th, 2019 that ended Friday night with a standoff at a Waco Hospital.
The City of Teague dispatched a police officer to City Hall in response to a report of a disruption at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. The suspect had a wooden rod, and was shaking it at Teague city staff, as per the press release issued by the City.
The suspect was later identified as 64-year-old Dexter Glenn Henderson by Waco Police Department.
After the call was made to the Teague Police Department, the suspect allegedly walked outside City Hall, and began to scream and march around the parking lot.
Around this time the Teague Police Officer arrived on location, making contact with the suspect. The officer was allegedly attacked by the suspect, according to the City’s official report.
As the officer and the suspect struggled, Henderson reportedly broke his wooden rod on the officer, injuring him.
The officer used verbal commands, and eventually deployed a taser. Neither approach was effective in stopping the suspect according to the authorities.
As the assault continued the officer discharged their duty issued firearm.
Both officer and suspect were transported to the hospital.
The officer has no life threatening injuries and was released that night, and the condition of the suspect was unavailable at the time.
The following evening, September 6th, 2019 at approximately 7:45 p.m., Waco Police Department responded to a Waco hospital to assist their security with an aggressive patient, Dexter Glen Henderson, who was being treated in ICU.
It was determined by Waco police that Henderson was the same suspect who had been shot by a Teague officer during the earlier incident near Teague City Hall.
The suspect, Henderson reportedly used a hospital syringe filled with medication as a weapon while he tore up his hospital room.
He again refused to comply with the officers as they tried to take him into custody, according to the Waco Police Department Press Release.
The use of pepper spray and a less-lethal impact round helped Henderson “reconsider his hostility,” and he decided to comply with authorities.
He was then taken into custody by Waco Police Department and placed under arrest.
Teague Police Department was not involved in the incident in Waco, Texas.
Additional charges may now be sought against the alleged perpetrator, according to Waco Police Department.
Teague’s Chief of Police DeWayne Philpott has requested the Texas Rangers to investigate the shooting incident in Teague, and referred to Freestone County Grand Jury.
The peace officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, according to standard procedure, until the investigation is complete.
“Teague Police Department would like to thank all the responses of support and prayers bestowed on us these past several days,” stated Chief Philpott. “It is very much appreaciated.”
