The Fairfield Eagles scored to open the third quarter and made the touchdown hold up as the pushed back the Brownsboro Bears and remain perfect on the young season at 2-0.
Fairfield will have their home opener next week against Athens and have passed in the role of road warriors with wins in Rusk and Brownsboro in the first two weeks of the season.
The teams exchanged possessions to open the game and the Eagle defense had the first takeaway early. Brownsboro quarterback Gage Wehrmann passed to the near sideline and it was tipped twice and landed in the arms of Trent Hauser. His 12-yard returned set the Eagle offense at the Bear 47. A miss handled snap cost the Eagles 25 yards on third down and the drive stalled and resulted in a punt.
The game flipped to the second quarter and Brownsboro took possession at their own 41-yard line. They chewed away over six minutes of the clock on a 14-play drive covering those 59 yards. The Fairfield defense rewarded the drive with two penalties resulting in first downs for the Bears and they scored on a fourth and goal at the one when Wehrmann plunged through for the touchdown. Lex Thompson reached up and blocked the point after attempt and the Brownsboro lead remained 6-0 with 1:49 remaining in the first half.
The lead would not last long and Fairfield took three plays to move down the field. Jar-Mychael Hudson had a couple of runs resulting in a first down. Quarterback Justin Abram tossed a pass into the night air and it landed with a 56-yard touchdown connection to Demarcus Hayes. Tyler Haynes added the extra point and the Eagles took the lead with 1:10 remaining in the half at 7-6.
Fairfield took the offense to the field to begin the second half and scored on their second consecutive possession to take the convincing margin of victory. The Eagles started at their 44-yard line and the drive took seven plays, all on the ground. They mixed carries from Eli Martin and Hudson, and Abram, who scored the touchdown on a 20-yard burst up the middle. Haynes added the point after for a 14-6 lead.
Brownsboro stalled a couple of times in the third quarter so the Eagle offense ended the quarter.
The Bears best drive of the night had to begin on their own two-yard line following a beautiful Haynes punt. The running offense took the field and had to convert twice on third down and once on fourth down to keep the drive alive. On the 18th play of the drive, a fourth down pass fell incomplete from 27 yards away and the Eagles took over.
Fairfield did fumble the ball away but the Bears could not get close enough to score in the final seconds of the game.
The Fairfield Eagles will be home the next three weeks with games against Athens and Palestine, before hosting the District 8-4A Division II opener against Lorena.
