The Bi-Stone County rivalry did not live up to the billing of years past when the Mexia Blackcats jumped out to a big lead and coasted to a 49-22 win over the Teague Lions at Blackcat Field Friday night.
The Blackcats built a 35-7 halftime lead with big plays on the offensive side of the ball and a stifling defensive front that did not allow the Lion running game to get going.
After a short possession for Teague, the Blackcats began to work on offense. On a third and long, quarterback Jaden Proctor dumped a screen pass to Jarrell Wiley and he took care of the rest. He raced through the Lion defense to complete a 71-yard pass and run. Proctor ran in the two-point conversion and the Blackcats took the early 8-0 lead with 9:45 remaining in the first quarter.
Mexia took advantage of a short punt and Proctor took the snap and ran up the middle untouched for the touchdown. The point after failed but the Blackcat lead was 14-0 with still half of the first quarter remaining.
Teague could not get the rushing offense moving down the field, so the went to the air and Jarrett Bodine’s pass across the middle was intercepted by Dre’Vaun Cooper. He picked up a couple of downfield blocks and cruised up the sideline for the touchdown and a 21-0 lead with the extra point.
The Lions made some personnel changes on the next possession and were able to get upfield with the offense. Drew Satterwhite took the direct snap at the Teague 15 and broke into the secondary on his way to an 83-yard run down to the Blackcat 2. A couple of plays later Gelico Green scored on a two-yard run and Roberto Escobedo added the extra point and cut the lead to 21-7.
Mexia would break the game open in the second quarter through the passing of Proctor. He threw a dart to Prince Banks for a touchdown to regain a three-touchdown lead. The Blackcat defense took advantage of a miss handled snap on a Teague punt and Proctor found Lemarion Miller for a 30-yard touchdown and Mexia built a 35-7 halftime lead.
The Blackcats took the ball in the second half and quickly added to the lead. The drive ended with Proctor throwing his fourth touchdown pass of the game, this one to Evan Harrison for the seven-yard score. Gustavo Martinez added the extra point and the lead swelled to 42-7.
Mexia’s final score of the game would come with some reserves seeing some playing time and Tray Jones scored on a 15-yard run for the 49-7 lead just over halfway through the third quarter/
Teague would add two late scores on a Bodine pass to Luke Stacks and a touchdown run by Stacks to close the gap 49-22.
The Teague Lions begin the season 0-2 and will head into their open week. They will be on the road the three weeks following the open week and play in Lorena, Hempstead, and Grandview.
