Dabrett Black was back in court for a pre-trial hearing on Friday, June 26, 2019.
Black stands accused of the shooting death of Texas DPS Trooper Damon Allen on Thanksgiving Day 2017.
Location for a Change of Venue was on the docket, as District Judge Patrick Simmons had granted that request back in March from Defense Attorney Susan Anderson, of the Regional Public Defender’s Office of Lubbock.
However, a new location has not been named as yet, as Judge Simmons announced that he had been speaking with different district judges in Texas about a host venue, and would be taking time to visit multiple courtrooms to determine which location would work best for the trial.
It is expected that the District Clerk and/or court personnel may join Judge Simmons in visiting these potential locations.
The next pre-trial has been set for September 26, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. In the meantime, the defendant has requested the assistance of bail bonds services. It is still to be determined whether he will be able to make use of said service or if there will even be a bond set at this time.
District Attorney Brian Evans says that in the interim, his office will be making arrangements to inspect and review the evidence in this case, including the gun which is housed in Austin and the defendant’s vehicle located in Houston.
Evans relates already having examined Trooper Allen’s vehicle in Waco.
