Wednesday, April 24, 2019 was a busy day for area First Responders as heavy rains caused multiple high water problems throughout Freestone County.
In Teague, unites responded to a vehicle stuck in the water at the underpass between Teague and Mexia, where the occupant was on the roof of his vehicle with a puppy.
According to reports, the driver drove around TXDOT vehicles and into the high water.
Both driver and puppy were rescued without incident.
Following this rescue, Fairfield, Dew and Teague Fire departments were paged to a vehicle submerged underwater on the I-45 Service road at the 193 mile marker. The occupants swam out to dry ground and were safe.
The County’s Rescue Boat was utilized for the first time in a swift water rescue on Freestone County Road 275.
Crews responded to a call of an occupant on top of his vehicle in dangerously swift moving water.
Without the boat, a successful rescue most likely would not have been possible.
Several local volunteer fire fighters are signed up to attend swift water rescue training to become rescue technicians in the near future.
However, there is still a great need for more rescue equipment such as life jackets, helmets, rope bags, dry suits, and more.
If you would like to contribute to this cause, you can donate by giving a check to your local fire department, made payable to Freestone County Fire Association.
