Election Day is just over thirty days away for the Cities of Teague and Fairfield. This week’s edition includes a Political Calendar, listing candidates seeking your vote. Additional political advertising is planned, as May 4th draws closer. During this time of year, The “Times” scrutinizes article and letter submissions to determine if they fall into the category of paid political advertising. First, any submission from a candidate, a candidate’s agent, or a political committee is considered political advertising. Next, any submission that supports or opposes a specific candidate for election to a public office is considered a paid political ad. This constitutes an express advocacy, and would include such wording as “vote for,” “elect,” “support,” “defeat,” “reject,” or “Smith for Senate.” According to the Election Code, such political advertising must include a disclosure statement to inform voters as to the individual or group that is seeking to influence the outcome of an election. An informed voter serves to protect the election process. Election Day is Saturday, May 4, 2019. Early voting will start April 22nd. The last day to register to vote in time for the City Elections is this Thursday, April 4th. Let your voice be heard.
