Fairfield has had a couple of games in the district race as they battle for a playoff spot to end the school year.
An outstanding start for senior Andre Carter came up short as the Fairfield Eagles lost 12-2 to the Rusk Eagles.
Carter made his second start on the year went 5 innings, allowing just three runs. But Rusk put the game away with 7 runs in the sixth.
After Rusk scored a run in the top of the first, Fairfield rallied in the bottom of the inning to take a lead.
With one out, senior Blake Posey singled and was chased home with a triple by sophomore Dane Allman. Junior Chandler Noble followed with a short fly to left to drive Allman home, giving the home team a 2-1 lead.
That was the last time Fairfield crossed home plate.
Posey, Allman and freshman Kaden Crawford each went 1-for-3 to lead the Fairfield Eagles offense.
“I’m proud of my guys. The score is not what we wanted, but we asked the guys to limit the errors and we did. We asked them to compete and they did. We started with two really good teams in district. We need to settle down and play our style baseball, play with confidence, and good things will begin to happen,” stated head coach Bill Crawford.
The Rusk Eagles lead the district race with a 3-0 record and Madisonville is a game back at 2-1. Palestine has split their first two district games and Mexia and Fairfield are tied for the final playoff spot at 0-2. The Eagles travel to Mexia for a pivotal district faceoff on Tuesday and then will host the Palestine Wildcats on Friday.
