First United Methodist Church, Fairfield, welcomes the community and worshipers of all faiths to “come as you are” on Ash Wednesday to gather in the candlelit sanctuary and experience the serenity of Taizé. The service is scheduled at 6:45 p.m. and will be led by guest cantor and violinist, Alison Adkins.
Taizé is patterned with scripture, meditation, simple repetitive songs and prayers for peace among all people. The music highlights lines from the Psalms and other scriptures that are repeated or sung in canon. The 45-minute service will include the imposition of ashes.
Evening Prayer in the manner of Taizé was inspired by an ecumenical Christian monastery that was begun in France in 1949 by Brother Roger Schuz-Marsauche offering hospitality, refuge and reconciliation in the aftermath of WWII. Today, over a hundred brothers of every Christian denomination from twenty-five nations lead prayer at one of the world’s most important sites of Christian pilgrimage. During the summer and other holidays, thousands of young people from all over the world flock to Taizé each week to live in community and pray for peace and justice through prayer and meditation.
Throughout the world, Taizé has spawned this unique style of worship that has become a part of many churches and seminaries promoting Christian unity.
A nursery will be provided. For more information, call the church office at 903. 389. 2225 or visit http://www.taize.fr/en.
