We have been accused of having “spoiled animals” on this ranch. I am confessing that we are guilty. Hummingbirds, Beagles, Cows, Squirrels, Blue Birds, Cardinals, etc., it doesn’t matter, we spoil ‘em! The only things we don’t spoil are snakes. It is almost out of hand, but there isn’t much we can do about it now at least nothing that would keep us from feeling badly about doing it.
The other day I went in the barn to feed some heifers that we had in the corral trying to fatten them up and when I came out I was met by two bulls. I had pulled very close to the door thinking the bulls would not be able to get between my truck and the barn. Well, they couldn’t but I had to laugh as I stepped out of the barn and saw them; one at the front of my truck and one at the back of my truck in line with the truck and barn. Well, their ploy worked and I gave them each a handful of cubes because they deserved it I thought.
The Beagles are the apples of our eyes, need I say more about them?! The Hummingbirds that visit here are always well fed and they know it. If I should happen to run out of their liquid feed they come over to the dining room window and look in and chirp. I immediately go and put more in the feeders. I always make sure that I cook their feed before they need it so I have it on hand. My other bird feeders are kept full too and we are rewarded with lots of Cardinals and Blue Birds. The squirrels are very tame mainly because we don’t shoo them away from anything. The Colonel even talks to them and we laugh at their antics. So, we enjoy the “spoiled creatures” here at the Red Oak Ranch.
