The Robinson Rockets overcame a 20-0 deficit and came back to win the game in overtime over the Mexia Blackcats 35-28 at Blackcat Field Friday night.
The loss all but eliminates the Blackcats from playoff contention and the Rockets have a huge home game against Fairfield this week.
Mexia jumped out to an early lead on their first possession. The Blackcat offense moved near midfield and senior quarterback Jaden Proctor called his own number. He dazzled the crowd with a 55-yard run for the first score of the game. The extra point was no good and the Blackcats had a 6-0 lead with 10:55 remaining in the first quarter.
Proctor would add a second touchdown midway through the first quarter. His 23-yard run put the Blackcats ahead 14-0 with 4:45 to go in the quarter.
Mexia opened the game up a bit with eight minutes to go in the first half. Proctor dropped back to pass and found Josh Beachum for the highlight reel score. The 53-yard touchdown gave the Blackcats what appeared to be a 20-0 lead.
Robinson got the offense in motion before the half and were able to get points before the break. Brady Kay scored on a three-yard run to close the gap with 4:43 remaining. The extra point cut the lead to 20-7.
The Rockets added a second touchdown before intermission. Junior quarterback Jordan Rogers hit Noah Richard for a 30-yard score with :11 remaining in the first half and the Blackcats held onto a 20-14 halftime lead.
The Robinson Rockets completed the comeback on their opening possession of the second half. Kay scored on a 35-yard run and tied the score at 20-20. The point after put the Rockets ahead at 21-20 with 9:18 remaining in the third.
The lead would not last long. Mexia regained the lead when Chris Slater scored on a seven-yard run and the Blackcats added the conversion for a 28-21 lead.
Robinson would get that score back on one of the first plays of the fourth quarter. Rogers scored on a quarterback keeper from five yards out and tied the game at 28-28. Both teams took some chances but neither team could score, and the game was set for overtime.
The Rockets scored early on their first possession in overtime. Robinson had a 12-yard run and then Kay busted through on a 13-yard scamper for the lead in overtime 35-28.
Mexia had their chance in overtime and picked up a couple of first downs in the early part of their possession. The had four chances from inside the ten-yard line but were stopped short of the goal line to preserve the win for the Robinson Rockets.
Fairfield defeated district leading Conally on Friday night and dropped them to 3-2. Lorena was idle, and they are now on top of the standings at 3-1. Robinson improves to 3-1 with the win over Mexia which is at 0-4 with two games remaining.
