Attention, area chili cooks, it’s time to register for the 2018 Southern Oaks Chili Cook-Off. This event is for the entire Richland Chambers Lake area community and includes cash prizes for best chili in three categories:

–Best Chili without Fillers (traditional),

–Best Chili with Fillers, both voted on by a panel of judges, and

–People’s Choice, voted on by attending chili enthusiasts.

Chili will be judged on aroma, color, flavor and consistency.

The Chili Cook-Off will be held at the Southern Oaks Clubhouse on Saturday, October 13, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, with public tasting and judging beginning at 2 pm. Cook-off winners will be announced at 3 pm.

“Celebrity” judges include local Fire Chief Van Wagnon, Community Care Club President Wanda Blake and New Hope Baptist Church Deacon Tom Blake.

Rules for the competition are as follows: Contestants must bring their own cooking station and supplies, chili must be cooked on site (no packaged mixes permitted), two gallons minimum of chili to be prepared (for judges and guests).

All chili enthusiasts are invited to attend and taste as much chili as they like. An admission fee of $6 buys attendees a bowl that can be filled with endless chili, as long as supplies last, along with the privilege of voting for their favorite chili.

Chili cooks must register by 6 pm on Friday, October 12th. Registration fee for teams to enter the cook-off is $30 per category, except People’s Choice, which is free. Registration forms are available through the SOPOA Office on Tuesday afternoon or by email (request by reaching out to texschutz78@gmail.com). You may also register online at www.southernoakstx.com.
