Over the weekend, The Colonel put some salt out for all the herds. When he went to the Back Herd he called Patriot up. Patriot is a great bull and he came running thinking of course that The Colonel had some cubes-which he didn’t. But Patriot was able to deal with that after The Colonel promised he would bring him some cubes later on!
While The Colonel was down there he was a huge Boar just walking around as if he owned the field. He did not seem to be afraid and The Colonel thought he could probably just drive up beside the hog and shoot him. That was when The Colonel made his horrible find!
He had taken his gun out of the truck and had left his gun in the holster at the house…something he never does. So the next best thing was to chase the hog with the truck. During this chase he ran across another little herd in the field; this herd consisted of a Sow and 4 piglets!
He kept chasing the whole group; the Sow, Piglets and the Boar who had caught up with the others. Glancing in the rearview mirror, The Colonel saw the whole herd of CATTLE joining in the chase.
When I was told the story later on, The Colonel told me he had a marvelous idea. He is going to train all herds to chase hogs out of the pastures. Who knows, he said, it might work! There are sometimes strange happenings at the Red Oak Ranch!!
