Senior Kaytlyn Brewer competed and placed second at state academic UIL meet in Austin in News Writing on May 4th. Brewer was the only Fairfield High School student to advance to state in academics.
The journalism team placed first, second, and third in every event at district except headline, and Brewer and her entire team advanced to regionals, which took place on April 14th.
Brewer placed third and junior Molly Allred placed fifth at the regional meet, leaving Brewer to advance to state.
“I am so proud of all of the team and the competition they give each other,” journalism sponsor Kathie Maciel said. “It is really difficult to advance past the regional level. These students attended up to five meets each to prepare for this.”
The state meet occurred at the University of Texas. Brewer was the only student advancing to state in her event from district 18, and this is her fourth year participating in journalism UIL.
“I’ve worked towards this since freshman year and I finally made it,” Brewer said. “When Mrs. Maciel asked me if I wanted to do journalism my freshman year, I was not expecting that I would be very good, much less make it to state.”
Ninety-six competitors in the state started out at the district level, and Brewer competed against 11 remaining students in her event.
“Making it to state is a huge accomplishment,” Brewer said. “I’ve had so much fun at the meets and made memories that will last a lifetime.”
