The Freestone County Retired Teachers Association had its regular meeting on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at the Los Ranchos Bar and Grill in Fairfield, TX, at 11:00 a.m.
The program consisted of a report of the State Convention by attendees. Those who attended the convention were Donna Senter, Terry Dunlap, Alicia Smith.
The convention was held at the LaCantera Resort in San Antonio. Freestone County received two awards: Highest Percentage Increase in Members 2017-2018 and TRTA President’s Diamond Plus Award which included a check for $1,000.
The Legislative Chair, Alicia Smith, stressed the importance of voting in the upcoming run-off election May 22. She encouraged members to vote for supporters of Public Education. Alicia stated that there will be no new money available to the Legislature, so money on hand will be spread thin. President Donna Senter made everyone aware of the Ready, Set, Blitz Campaign initiated by TRTA. Awards of $500 will be given to local units that have the largest percentage increase in Diamond Plus members and the highest overall membership count. Units are divided into groups depending on current member numbers. Members are encouraged to renew their memberships early and to become Diamond Plus members. Diamond Plus refers to those who pay their dues through monthly payroll deduction or monthly bank draft. All members should encourage other retired teachers to join the state and local units using the Diamond Plus options.
