Heartfelt, heart breaking, heartwarming – all of those describe Amanda McBroom’s music which reflects pop, folk and country traditions. McBroom is scheduled to perform a Valentine concert along with accompanist, Michele Brourman, on February 10 at Depot X Event Center.
The cabaret singer, songwriter, actress McBroom was inspired to write THE ROSE when, as she explains: “a song came on the radio about love and I thought, ‘what do I think love is?’ Suddenly words came pouring in. I had to keep reciting them to myself as I drove faster and faster towards home, so I wouldn’t forget them. I screeched into my driveway, ran into the house, past various bewildered dogs and cats and husband and sat down at the piano. Ten minutes later, THE ROSE was there.”
Her beautiful lyrics deny that love is a drowning river or endless hunger, but instead like a flower, with the listener as its seed.
It was at the suggestion of Michele Brourman that THE ROSE be submitted as title song to a movie of the same name, one that loosely depicted the life of Janis Joplin, and for which McBroom won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song for a Motion Picture in 1980. Bette Midler, who played the starring role, and the producer selected the song from over 3,000 submitted.
In the upcoming concert, guests will be treated to the artist’s performance of THE ROSE.
