The Teague Lions battled from a 35-7 deficit but could not take the lead and their season ended on the turf at Waco ISD Stadium. The Rockdale Tigers reach the state semifinals with a 42-20 win over the Lions.
Teague committed 15 penalties for 125 yards and had two touchdowns called back. They were able to get some momentum with a couple of quick scores in the third quarter, but it was not enough to complete a comeback and their trip through the playoffs ended in the fourth round.
Teague had to punt on their first possession and Rockdale wasted little time putting points on the board. Senior quarterback Torry Locklin went to work with a pass down the far sideline to receiver Tyler Lehmkuhl for 61 yards to the two-yard line.
Two plays later Locklin pushed in from one yard out and the point after gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 9:22 remaining in the first quarter.
The Lions matched that score on the next possession. The drive stalled at Rockdale 48-yard line and the punt team came on for Teague.
Satterwhite had his punt blocked but it bounced into the hands of running back Tayvis Coleman and he rushed for the first down at the 32. Coleman had a 25-yard carry to the three-yard line and Trevor Cooper carried the final three for the tying touchdown.
With just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Lion defense set up the short field. Tyrell Canady ripped a pass out of the air for an interception and returned it 23 yards to the Rockdale 20. Teague could not advance for a first down and the Tigers took over on downs.
On the first play of the second quarter, Locklin appeared to overthrow all-stater Jaquayln Crawford. Crawford turned on the speed and ran under the pass to complete the 52-yard touchdown and the lead grew to 14-7.
Rockdale tried an on sides kick and it was successful, so the Tiger offense returned to the field. Locklin scrambled for 25 yards to the Teague 20-yard line and Lehmkuhl caught a short touchdown pass for the 21-7 lead. The half would end with the Rockdale two touchdown lead.
The Tigers took the kickoff at the beginning of the second half and were able to return to the scoreboard. A short gain and two incomplete passes called for the punt team.
Crawford took the snap and raced up the right side for a 12-yard scamper and a first down. Locklin finished the drive with a one-yard run and the lead grew to 28-7.
Locklin would add another touchdown on a two-yard run for a 35-7 lead but the Lions would attempt a comeback.
Antonio Heard took over taking the snaps at quarterback was a difference in the quickness. Heard scrambled for a 29-yard run on his first snap and a couple of defensive penalties set the Lion offense up inside the ten. Coleman plunged over for a two-yard score and the lead was cut to 35-14.
Rockdale could do nothing and had to punt. Canady returned the punt for 17 yards and Rockdale was called for a 15-yard penalty and the Lions had possession near midfield.
Satterwhite completed a pass to Coleman for a 40-yard gain to the Rockdale 15-yard line. Gelico Green took the handoff and bulled his way in the touchdown and cut the lead to 35-20 after the missed extra point.
Teague decided to try the on sides kick. It was also successful when Rodney Kuykendall recovered the kick and the Lions had a chance to make it a one score game. The drive stalled, and the Lions had to punt.
Rockdale started their next possession at their own 16-yard line. On a third and four from the 20, Locklin’s pass was intercepted by Coleman and he returned it for an apparent touchdown. The Lions were called for an illegal block, but the Lions had the ball at the Rockdale 23.
On first and goal from the eight-yard line, Satterwhite tossed a tackle eligible to Marcus Williams and he lumbered for another apparent touchdown. The Lions were called for an illegal formation and then a five-yard penalty was stepped off. The drive was stalled on a turnover on downs.
The Tigers took over on the ten-yard line and took nine plays to close out the game. On first down from the five, Locklin scored his fourth touchdown of the night. The drive consumed nearly six minutes off the clock and the Tigers advance to the semifinals with a 42-20 win.
