NSDAR Jonathan Hardin Chapter members celebrated the 127th anniversary of the founding of the national organization at its regular monthly business meeting on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at the Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia.
Each year on October 11, chapters across the country chose to celebrate by planning and carrying out a National Day of Service Project.
During the business meeting, Vice Regent Kathleen McKee spotlighted the U.S. Constitution from the National Defense Report as a follow-up to Constitution Week September 17-23.
Chapter members were briefed on the annual Service to Veterans project in December by committee chairman and Second Vice Regent Jo Ann Slauson. Specific needs were addressed.
Actual and monetary donations may be brought to the November meeting. Gift bags to be taken to veterans in Freestone and Limestone nursing homes will be assembled at the Wednesday, December 6, meeting which will include a covered-dish luncheon for the chapter. Chapter members will deliver gift bags after the meeting.
For the meeting program and unbeknownst to chapter members, Regent McBay had prepared a game, “How Much Do You Know About the Constitution?” Competition was spirited and challenging since it had been many years since civics class in high school. Members received cookies with “127” on them for the celebrated number of years for NSDAR.
Following the meeting, chapter members put the finishing touches on its service project. The project chosen expresses support and appreciation to local first responders in county communities in Freestone and Limestone for their protection and support. Bags of snacks and treats were assembled and prepared for distribution after the meeting.
Any woman 18 years or older regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible for membership.
