The Teague Lions built a big halftime lead and dominated the Elkhart Elks at James Ives Memorial Stadium in Elkhart.
Teague rolled up big yardage and held the Elkhart offense in check the entire night. The offense used the big play and superior speed to run past the Elks on their way to a district victory.
The lone Elkhart highlight of the night came on the opening kickoff. John Ashford took the kick at the 15-yard line and raced straight through the Lions wave of tacklers.
He ran untouched for the touchdown with 11:45 remaining in the first quarter. Ashford would leave a couple of possessions later with an injury. The extra point gave the Elks a 7-0 lead.
Teague fielded the kick and set up their offense at their own 35-yard line. Quarterback Zack Satterwhite took gave the ball to Tayvis Coleman and he broke out into the open for the 65-yard touchdown run on the first snap from scrimmage.
Roberto Escobedo added the point after and tied the game at 7-7 on 30 seconds into the game.
Elkhart had to punt again and the Lions added points early and often in the remaining minutes of the first quarter. The Lions marched downfield and got to the 20-yard line.
On fourth down, Satterwhite passed across the middle and hit Trevor Cooper for the touchdown and a 14-7 lead.
The ensuing kickoff was more disaster for the Elks. Escobedo pinned the kick down in the corner near the goal line and Demarcus Ray picked it up at the one.
He gave ground into the end zone and was knocked down and the ball popped loose. The officials ruled he was down in the end zone and it was ruled a safety and the Lion lead grew to 16-7.
The Lions took the free kick and added points to the lead with 3:12 to go in the quarter. Coleman pushed it in from the two-yard line and the point after putting the score at 23-7.
Teague had one more score before the end of the quarter. Jelico Green scored on a 14-yard run a few plays after Ty Abram had recovered a fumble. Green ripped the run up the middle and the score extended to 30-7.
With a commanding lead, Green had the highlight of the night on the next Teague possession. With 10:34 remaining in the half, Green took the handoff and went up the right side of the offensive line.
He was hit but stayed on his feet and won the race to the end zone for the 46-yard touchdown and a 37-7 lead.
Halfway through the second quarter, the Lions put up the final points of the night. Tyrese Heard got behind the secondary and Satterwhite tossed him the ball and he was open for the score and the lead grew to 44-7.
The second half was used for some reserves and the 44-7 halftime lead and that was the final score. The Teague Lions will return home for only the second time this season and host the Whitney Wildcats.
Teague remains one game behind co-leaders Malakoff and West in the district standings.
