Wortham ended up in the last seat for the silver bracket after having a rough two day pool play. Kayla Lansford rested her ankle on Thursday and Wortham lost all three pool play matches which included Leon, Cayuga and St. Joseph. Kayla came back Friday for pool play and Wortham lost to Caldwell in two games, beat Teague in two games and then lost to Centerville in two games.
Wortham started the tournament bracket play in the Silver bracket and faced the number one seat Grapeland.
Wortham started off strong beating Grapeland in the first game 25-12 then winning the second game 25-21. Wortham then faced Cayuga but fell short 17-25 and 15-25. Wortham then played Normangee for third place and came out winning 25-21 and 25-22. Wortham took third place in the silver bracket.
Leading the team on Saturday was Kayla Lansford with 25 kills, 10 digs, 7 blocks and three aces.
Setter Jayde Hamilton had 5 kills, three aces, 4 blocks, 3 digs and 25 assists.
Libero Hallie Fautt continued to control the defense in serve receive and having 34 digs. Fautt also had three aces and 2 kills.
Ashley Mao was strong at the net with 22 kills and 3 blocks. Ashley had 4 aces and 3 digs.
Setter Darcy Taylor had 6 digs, 4 aces and 15 assists.
Sophomore Rylee Goolsby continued to help the offense with 18 kills and 3 blocks.
Skylar Phillips had 3 kills, 2 digs and stepped in to help with setting with 8 assists.
Samantha Wright had 9 kills, 2 assists and 6 digs.
Defensive specialist Megan Whaley helped out with serve receive and had 15 digs.
“I’m very proud of my girls and how they came together today during the Tournament,” says Coach DeAnna Whaley. “We came in as the underdogs and proved to everyone and ourselves that we can come together as a team and accept the challenge.”
Wortham will have a home game against Bloomimg Grove on Tuesday.
