In a report recently published by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), it was indicated that Freestone County had a veteran population of 1,471 during calendar year 2016 and these veterans received $1 1,835,000 from the VA. The $11,835,000 received
- Compensation and Pension – $6,377,000;
- Medical Care – $5,056,000;
- Education and Vocational Rehabilitation – $325,000; and
- Insurance and Indemnities – $77,000
The VA also reported that 526 Freestone County veteran patients received treatment at a VA Health Care facility during 2016. These facilities are located in Palestine, Waco, Temple, and Dallas.
