The meeting of the Jonathan Hardin Chapter, NSDAR was held, September 14, 10:30AM at Gibbs Memorial Library, Mexia, Texas. Regent Aleece McBay led members in the Pledges to the United States Flag, Texas Flag, and the American’s Creed. Mrs. McBay informed members of exciting events, activities, and programs for the coming year.
There was a lot of excitement this summer. DAR broke the Guinness World Record with 100,904 letters collected and distributed to active duty service men and women in one month’s time. Requirement was to collect 10,000 letters from individuals, must be hand written and only one letter per person. Members reached out to their communities and schools for help. On National Defense night the adjudicator made the announcement DAR had surpassed all expectations.
Registrar Billie Bournias welcomed new member Teresa Stafford Penny and introduced prospective new members. Mrs. Bournias inducted her into the DAR .
This month DAR will remember the POW and MIA on September 16 and their sacrifices. A list of those missing from Texas was on display during the meeting. Jonathan Hardin Chapter along with all DAR members will celebrate Constitution Week, September 11-16.
The program, DAR Schools, was given by State Chaplain, Kay Alston. Mrs. Alston has been on the committee of the DAR schools for many years, and now is on the board of Tamassee School. Mrs. Alston spoke about the two schools owned by DAR which are Kate Duncan Smith Schools on Gunter Mountain in Alabama and the other Tamassee School in South Carolina both being almost 100 years old. There are four others schools supported by DAR which she also discussed.
DAR is a service organization that promotes historical preservation, education, and patriotism. Since DAR founding in 1890 members have given back to their community with over 10 million hours being logged since 2013. Anyone interested in joining the Daughters of the American Revolution may contact the National Society at www.dar.org, or contact our local chapter Regent Aleece McBay 254-729-5177, or Registrar Billie Bournias 903-389-3592 for more information.
