Sunday September 11th marks the 15th anniversary of the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. 2,977 innocent Americans lost their lives due to the cowardly acts of a band of criminals backed by an international movement of twisted beliefs and ideology. Similar, but not as costly, attacks have occurred across the world ever since. The face of our Nation was changed on that date, our society forever altered. 343 NYFD Firemen, (among them the Chief of the Department, 17 Battalion Chiefs and 23 Battalion Captains) 37 Port Authority of New York Policemen, (including the Superintendent and Chief of the Department) 23 NYPD Policemen, and 8 Emergency Medical Technicians were among the lost, lost doing their jobs. Responding to the call for help, they entered the burning, broken disaster of the World Trade Center buildings and up the stairs they went, searching for the wounded and others who couldn’t find a clear path down. A famous WWII air ace once described courage as “being scared to death and doing your job anyway.” We all know what happened next, we saw the images live as the buildings collapsed into rubble, taking the innocent down with it. Today many don’t want to see these images, they recoil in horror at the very mention of the event, and they bury their heads in the sands of fear and cowardice and attempt to explain it as tolerance and understanding. Real evil exists, and it showed itself that day.
What a dishonor they do to the brave heroes who climbed those stairs into the darkness. It is for these men and women that we stand for the National Anthem. It is for these men and women that we fly the Stars and Stripes. It is for these men and women, and many more throughout the years who gave their last full measure; that we pray for real peace among men. Never forget.
